Understanding Lawyers - Don't Think the Worst

I got into a car accident when my daughter was 2 years old. My daughter was not injured in the crash, but I was. The accident was caused by a distracted driver talking on her cell phone. The driver insisted that I was attending to my daughter and I took my eyes off the road. I unfortunately had many medical bills to pay and I had very little time to fight with insurance companies over settlement payments. I was concerned about the cost of an attorney, but I met with a lawyer anyway to help with the accident claim. The lawyer relieved my stress and dealt with the insurance company and the other driver. I want you to know that lawyers can be helpful, kind, and caring. Most people think the worst of these professionals, but I want you to know that lawyers should not be feared or avoided.

4 Tips For Understanding Your Personal Injury Claim

If you have been in an accident and have filed a personal injury claim as a result, you will want to know what you are getting yourself into. The more you know about your case, the more successful your case is going to be, after all. Here are four tips that will help you to better understand your personal injury claim:

  1. Talk to Your Lawyer: The first thing you should do before you actually file a claim is to talk with a personal injury lawyer. They will be able to help you determine if your case can be settled before it goes to court, which ensures that the case will be resolved in a timely manner. If your personal injury lawyer believes that the case will be taken to court, it's important to discuss whether or not filing is worth it at that point.
  2. Don't Talk to the Insurance Company: The insurance company that is going to be contacting you on behalf of the opposite party is concerned with saving themselves money. Thus, you don't want to say certain things to the insurance company that could be held against you later on. You should know that you do not need to give a recorded statement to the company about the accident. In fact, let your personal injury lawyer talk to the insurance company instead of talking to them yourself. This can help you avoid making some potentially damaging statements.
  3. Give All Documents to Your Lawyer: All documents that relate to your personal injury case need to be given to your lawyer. He or she will use these documents to build up your case and ensure that you receive the proper compensation. These documents include medical records, medical bills, and even your previous payroll statements, which will help determine how much you should be compensated for lack of time at work. This is going to help you determine what settlement offer you should be looking for.
  4. Ask Before You Sign: Before you sign anything, you need to read it over and ask your lawyer if you are confused about any statements or wording that is made. This will ensure that you are in the know about your case and are not signing anything that you believe is not the best for you to agree to.

When you utilize these four tips, you can better understand how your personal injury claim is going to be resolved.
